[ The Bahamas ] • Getting Around • Vol. II

It’s officially Summer!

No seriously. Friday past was June 21st, the day of the yearly Summer solstice which marks the first official day of Summer in the northern hemisphere. On Friday, the sun reached its highest point in the sky and it was subsequently the longest day of the entire year. Actually, the sun was directly over the Tropic of Cancer (which runs through both Exuma & Long Island) at exactly 11:54am on Friday and in The Bahamas we experienced up to 14 hours of daylight.

On average, The Bahamas has a little over 300 days of sunshine each year; the land of eternal summer perhaps. Now that summer is officially here, in a place where the sky almost always seamlessly transcends into the waters below, travel plans are being made and/or finalized.

Last year, I wrote a blog post on actually getting to the family islands, because I’m often asked, “How to get there?” by many people who want to go and just don’t know how.

[ The Bahamas ] • Getting Around

It was the ultimate guide for air travel in and around the family islands of The Bahamas and I even included the Turks & Caicos Islands, which is politically separate from The Bahamas but is geographically contiguous. Since I last did this, a few changes have been made. With Western Air’s addition of 4 new aircraft to their fleet, they expanded operations into more of the family islands (Abaco, Cat Island & Exuma), Bahamasair added additional days for some family islands (Acklins, Eleuthera & Great Inagua) and Sky Bahamas cut back operations effecting all of their routes, except Cat Island. They completely ceased service to Grand Bahama leaving only Bahamasair & Western Air with regularly scheduled flights from New Providence.

Now that you’re aware of who goes where and when, when are you going?
